Creation of the Community Service Action Club

The Community Service Action Club had a great 2024 kick off meeting. The middle school students (all 50 of them!) brought energy, thoughtfulness, teamwork, compassion, patience, great ideas and humor, all after a long week.  Here’s a recap:

They brainstormed to develop
Club Goals. We talked about kids just like them making a huge difference, including a local middle school student who recently collected over 600 Halloween costumes to share with others. Here’s community issues they identified that they would like to work on through service projects:
  • Food security
  • Clothing needs
  • Housing/shelter
  • Academic support/school supplies
  • Basic necessities/hygiene (ex. making toothbrush kits
  • Making sure all kids have access to opportunities such as clubs and other events
  • Donating/Reusing/Recycling their toys and clothes which helps others, saves money and reduces waste in our environment
  • Supporting other charities

They wrote Essential Agreements so we can build a fun, focused group at our meetings and projects. They include:
  • Working Together
  • Encouraging each other
  • Honoring one voice at a time
  • Everyone’s opinion matters
  • If you don’t have something kind to say, don’t say it
  • WE ARE A TEAM!

"Almost everyday at morning prayers, students at SJP say a prayer: ‘Jesus before my eyes, Jesus in my heart, Jesus in my hands.’ This prayer helps us to understand what we need to do as disciples of Jesus. When we have Jesus in our eyes, we can see the good in people. We don’t judge people based on appearance, just as Jesus wouldn’t. To have Jesus in our hearts, we have to form as intimate a relationship with Him through prayer and mediation. Having Jesus in our hearts means that when people see us, they can see the light of Jesus shining in us through our words and actions. Having Jesus in our hands means that we need to do works of charity, carrying Jesus in our hands and bringing Him to others. SJP has taught us how to love Jesus in our hearts. Jesus is the cornerstone of my faith, but SJP has built that cornerstone into a skyscraper that cannot be toppled." -7th Grader
