Shakespeare Enrichment Curriculum for 2016/17

ALPS 8th Grade Students


Days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday

From: 7:30 am – 8:15 am

Start Date: Monday, September 12, 2016

This class will explore the works of William Shakespeare through a holistic approach that will include British history, reading, critical analysis, research writing and performance.

British History

Students will examine the life and times of William Shakespeare. This will include:

  • Elizabethan England
  • Historical figures and events
  • The biography of William Shakespeare and the Globe Theatre


Students in this class will read three plays by William Shakespeare. This will include:

  • A Tragedy ( Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth)
  • A History (Richard the III)
  • A Comedy(A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Taming of the Shrew)

Critical Analysis

Students in this class will analyze each play. This which include:

  • The breakdown of text in order to examine key elements
  • Identifying themes in Shakespeare’s plays
  • Understanding the author’s purpose

Research Writing

Students in this class will develop meaningful questions and write a project proposal. This will include:

  • Drafting a compelling question based on our study of William Shakespeare and his plays
  • Submitting a three paragraph proposal (student should explain what he/she already knows, what he/she is still curious about, why this inquiry is worthwhile?
  • Researching a variety of sources for relevant and reliable information
  • Synthesizing the information to create knowledge and meaning
  • Submitting a final project that incorporates written research with technology (power point presentation)


Performance Students will be given an opportunity to perform scenes from the plays they have studied at a school assembly!
